MattChat
Hold a key, say what you mean, let go. Your words appear wherever your cursor is. Nothing is sent anywhere.
Version 0.1.0 · Windows 10 and 11, 64-bit · No administrator rights needed
Why I made it
I talk a lot faster than I type. The good dictation tools send your voice to the cloud, though, and I didn't want everything I say going to someone else's server. MattChat runs a speech model on your own PC. Once the model has downloaded it doesn't need the internet at all, and it doesn't need an account or an API key.
How it works
Push to talk
Hold Alt Gr and speak. A small waveform pill shows it's listening. When you let go, the text is typed into whatever app you're using, whether that's email, chat, a document or a code editor.
Completely private
Speech recognition runs locally using Whisper. The microphone opens when you press the key and is released as soon as you let go.
Tidy text, not rewritten text
Filler words are removed and punctuation is added. If you say “forty, sorry, fourteen”, it keeps the fourteen. Your wording is never paraphrased.
Lists from speech
Say “shopping list milk eggs bread and coffee” and you get a proper bulleted list.
Your dictionary
Teach it names and jargon. Right-click a misheard word to correct it, and it remembers the fix for next time.
Stats that matter
See your words per week, your speaking pace and the typing time you've saved, plus a history you can replay.
Leaves your clipboard alone
Text is typed in with keystrokes, so whatever you'd copied is still there afterwards.
Fast on normal hardware
It runs comfortably on a laptop CPU and uses an NVIDIA graphics card automatically if you have one.
Installing
- Run
MattChat-Setup-0.1.0.exe. It installs for your user only and bundles everything it needs, so you don't need Python. - Setup asks whether you want the optional 1.1 GB AI polish model. You can skip it and download it later from Settings.
- The speech model (about 145 MB) downloads the first time you dictate. After that MattChat works offline.
- The installer isn't code-signed yet, so Windows SmartScreen may warn you. Click More info and then Run anyway.
This is an early release, so expect a few rough edges. SHA-256: 146a429868c7c6e3a997a2b3ad3e43306ce8dd1914b7064469d8ade0011dee84
